What is a biogas?

Biogas is a product of decomposition with a lack of oxygen. It can be referred to as biomethane, swamp gas, or landfill gas. Biogas is mainly composed of methane and carbon dioxide, with some small amounts of hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide.

How are biogases made?

Biogas can be harvested either from landfills or from animal wastes. In the landfills wastes are piled on top of organisms that use anaerobic digestion to survive. All the wastes cause a lack of oxygen and the conditions are optimal for these types of organisms which produce methane. The gas is released into a tank that is air tight where the methane will be converted into biogas. Animal manure can also be converted into methane gas.

Benefits

Biogas has many benefits. Converting methane which is a very powerful green house gas into biogas has enormous environmental benefits. Methane is very harmful to the planet and converting it to biogas will be a better alternative. Biogas can also be used to make heat and electric energy as well as a fuel. Biogases also use landfills which are a problem due to their potential to release green house gases and turn them into a source of clean renewable energy.
